Katja Leibenath

The paintings are figurative abstractions of either the human form or a specific place. She works from her own source material: photographs, sketches and plain air renderings of things I see on my travels. I translate this material into oil paintings over the course of many months in my studio. During the paintings process the original object becomes obscured and less important, allowing something new and separate to emerge.
Originally from Germany with a background in architecture and art, Katja has been painting in San Francisco since 2006. Her work is part of public and private collections internationally and has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Atlanta, in addition to San Francisco.
